Synopsis:
A family of 3 lives in Manila: KORA CASTILLO, the mother; JOHN CASTILLO, the father; and RONA CASTILLO, the daughter.
As RONA CASTILLO got home from school, she found her mother and father in disarray. She was informed that her grandmother had just passed away, and they needed to return to their hometown for the burial.
After arriving back in Ilocos, they set off doing their own things. While all the adults were busy, RONA CASTILLO wandered around the grounds of their family home, finding a young girl who was playing with some kind of machine. They talked and quickly became friends. The girl introduced her to using the weaving machine.
During their time together, the girl lightly mentioned being an orphan and only really having the weaving machine to keep her company.
Suddenly, JOHN CASTILLO was screaming in anger, yelling at a lawyer that he couldn’t just take the weaves and designs he made with his mother. This brought out a different side of JOHN CASTILLO. He was normally kind and relaxed — this struck a particular nerve that no one saw coming, not even the lawyer. RONA CASTILLO tried to reach out to her father, but his temper was too much for both of them.
After a while, the burial was complete. RONA CASTILLO had to say goodbye to her friend, asking her to keep in close contact on social media. The girl agreed, but after RONA returned home, there was nothing. She checked daily but not a single notification. She tried to approach her father, but JOHN CASTILLO was too busy trying to fight the lawyer’s copyright claim.
After 40 days, they returned to their hometown once again. RONA tried to search for her friend, but she was nowhere to be found. Sadly, she returned to the building where she had met the girl. She wandered around the room and started using the weaving machine, like her friend had shown her.
After a while, her father found her after speaking with her mother. Wondering why she was in her grandmother’s old workshop, RONA explained that she had a friend who showed her how to use the tools and equipment. They shared an honest family moment between father and daughter.
JOHN CASTILLO invited his daughter back home so they could eat and rest before their journey back. As they entered the house, they walked past old pictures. In one of the pictures was clearly her friend, slightly older and carrying a baby boy — the date was many years ago.
As the family discussed RONA CASTILLO’s friend, her father realized something. He stood from the table, brought her a picture of her mother when she was younger, and RONA CASTILLO confirmed that it was her.
